The course addresses the historical development & transition from prescriptive building & fire codes to performance-based approaches now recognized world-wide. We will outline how performance-based approach is organized through statements
of design intent & detailed design performance requirements. The tools available for performance-based design will be addressed with an emphasis on fire dynamics tools & modeling approaches to address human behavior & safe egress from fires. Several real-world examples will reinforce concepts & illustrate the practical, useful aspects of performance-based design
& modeling applications.
SPEAKERS: Dan O'Connor & Jeffrey Harper, Jensen Hughes
Learning Objectives:
• Understanding the historical development of performance-based design
• Learn how performance based objectives are related to model codes & how those objectives can be detailed to requirements that are qualitatively measurable
• Become familiar with fire analysis tools & approaches that can be utilized to resolve fire protection & fire safety questions for a building design or product application
• Understand the benefits of performance- based design in the realm of real-world applications
